Trailer
park ousted for Costco
AZ, 07/05 ( Newszap Arizona )- Northeast Phoenix
resident Steven Mitchell, 15, feels he was robbed
twice over - he lost his bike about the same time
bulldozers took over the neighboring trailer park
where his best friends used to live.
"I was really depressed when it happened
two months ago," Steven said. "My friends
were forced to move and without my bike, I had
no way of visiting them."
Until two months ago, Steven's closest friends
lived in a trailer park - Park Place Community
on Cave Creek and Beardsley roads - across the
street from the apartment he and his mom share.
"Some residents have been in that community
for 20 years or more," Steve's mom Silvia
Nettleton said. "They were definitely not
pleased about the move. And, for what?" Make
room for big biz.
Park Place residents were given 180 days to vacate
the land their mobile homes were on to make way
for the construction of the Cave Creek commercial
center where wholesaler Costco is set to open
a 150,000-square-foot warehouse facility. Eight-year
Park Place resident Keith Zahan was among those
that had to leave. "We were given 180 days
notice then basically just told to leave,"
Mr. Zahan said. "I didn't really like to
move but we didn't have a choice."
